My name is Dave Holmes, I'm the Managing Director of Soul Tonic
I also perform, teach and record music, and more recently involved in BRAZILIAN genres.

So this is the first podcast ..and you may be asking, WHAT IS SOUL TONIC?
Well, it's a company that I formed last year, in order to work more professionaly within the areas of Arts, Culture and Entertainment.
Basically it's a platform where I can engage in most things I enjoy in a professional way.
So in the future podcasts, we'll have a short news section at the start regarding company news....and then music by Soul Tonic artists, of which I am one, and then we'll have other great music from my network of talented friends, along with some interviews and anecdotes.

So, Soul Tonic is currently split into 3 main categories : Workshops, Events and Record Label.
With the ..
workshops,
the idea is to give people a chance to learn something new, or take existing skills to a higher level. We offer quality sessions, of anything artistic or cultural.
The first session we carried out was a Beatbox Workshop back in September 2016, with UK Beatbox Championships contender micbsounds, and that went down as a REAL success! So we are planning to run more of those this year.
To give you an idea of what goes down, here's a short clip of the beatbox workshop:

So, the next workshop we have planned is to do with music software - Teaching people how to get off the ground with a popular and powerful program, called Ableton live.

Events
So, the main events work that I do, is as an event producer for the Brazilian Samba percussion community. With the Rio olympics last year, demand was very high very for Brazilian shows, and actually they are always popular at local fetes and festivals here in the UK.
I have also been involved in a European Tour for a Brazilian artist, and I will talk a bit more about that in a moment,
plus related to that, one of the things my company now offers for events is a classic, authentic Brazilian BOSSA NOVA act, which is formed of myself as a solo artist, or a larger band format with guest performers.
and Finally....
The Record label
The label side of things has really come about since a couple of years ago, when I part-crowdfunded a demo of some classic Brazilian Bossa Nova tunes, which I called - 'Born To Bossa'.
I eventually made a second album. and BOTH of these got picked up by radio and websites, around the world; from UK to Japan, to Jamaica to Peru... and if you want to hear or download these two demos, for free, head BornToBossa.com
More recently I have been working on a track of mine which has been in production in UK, Portugal, and Brazil and it's gonna be my first single, of hopefully many.

So back to that tour I spoke of - One of the Bossa artists I sent my demo to, is Andrea Amorim, and she is quite a well known singer/songwriter from the North East of Brasil. she asked me if I wanted to produce and perform on her European Tour... I accepted. and we had a fantastic 2016 tour from 27th July to the 15th of August, travelling from UK to Belgium , to The Netherlands and then back to the UK. We then flew out to Portugal and spent a week playing there with support from MdBAudio Studios.
And there is a link to the Youtube video of a Facebook live stream during the first half of our Portugal rehearsal which has had almost 2000 views, and I'll put a link the original which is on Andrea's Facebook profiles.
There's also some interviews we did about the tour in English and Portuguese and some tour photos which I'll link too as well.

So we had a fun gig at Camp Bestival Festival which is at Lulworth Castle, in the UK, and we were joined by a couple of Brazilian guys from the London scene: Fabricio Azevedo on Drums, and Kita Steuer on Bass.
At L'Archiduc, which within Jazz circles is a very well known venue in Brussels, we were joined by Fabricio again on drums
and for Portugal he was there too on drumkit and percussion, plus we also had local resident, Brazilian Ronaldo Firmino, on extra percussion.
We were also joined on a couple of gigs there by a local Portuguese flautist, called Maurício Távora .
So here's a clip of Andrea, talking a little (in Portuguese) about the tours and about her being signed to the label and introducing a clip from the tour last year where we played at Quebramar Beach Club in Portugal.

So, Andrea is a very versatile singer, who really just wants to sing, and she can effortlessly sing in ALL musical styles, whether that's Bossa nova, Rock or Opera...
She's performed on Brasil's biggest TV show, Programa de Jô and appeared on other local TV and radio shows, she's performed in Europe, USA and Japan and more recently was the official voice of her home city where her christmas album was played over the tannoy system in the streets of the main centre and she performed shows, as part of their seasonal festivities.
So to get a feel for her voice, let's listen to the opening track, from her last album Doce Divã, this is called Felicidade Em Pleno Escuro (which translates as Happiness in full darkness)

So the reason I contacted Andrea initially was that she has performed and recorded with some big names in brasil such as Marcos Valle, Oswaldo Montenegro, Cris Delanno, Lenine, Wanda Sá, Bebossa, and Os Cariocas to name a few and couple of years before I got in touch with, she also released a Bossa Nova Album called 'Bossa de Alma Nova' (which means Bossa of the New Soul) and that was with a Latin Grammy , lifetime acheivement Award Winner, and Bossa Nova music pioneer, Roberto Menescal.
So that album is really a delight to listen to and if you want to go online to buy or stream it, I'll put the links on the podcast page.
Now if you think of Brazil, (it) has a population of almost 1/4 Billion people and the airport of its most famous city, in Rio de Janeiro, is named after Bossa Nova's master composer Tom Jobim. Now Tom Jobim was one of Menescal's old music buddies. all the greats would meet up in each other's appartments and create this whole genre which shook everything up in the 50s and 60s - and although perhaps not cutting edge anymore, Bossa Nova is a sofisticated genre and musical tradition that commands a lot of respect within Brazil, and also outside Brazil where it has a great folowing especially in Japan and Mainland europe and heavily influences new artists such as myself.
So Menescal is a very important figure in Brazilian Music - and he also used to be the head of A&R at Polygram in Brasil for many years. He's a super-productive, energetic guy - and he started composing and performing when he was just a teenager and he'll be 80 this year. He's still going for it, and he's non-stop recording and touring. and back in November last year, I got to have lunch with him in Rio, and it was a dream to meet one of my Bossa nova Heros, and coincedently he was even on the front page of the Brazilian version of guitar (guitar player) magazine at the time! Which goes to show he is still current and on top of the game.
So, he is still working with Andrea, and they have some new album material together, a track of which will form part of Andrea's new album, Futuro Embrulhado pra Presente, (which means Future wrapped as a present), and I am proud to say that this album will be released on Soul Tonic, along with some other albums from her back catalogue and all future releases.
The new album will also include one old composition of mine called Faded Dreams, which she is adding Portuguese lyrics to, and will have arrangements and and production by her talented producer, Marcos Cabral. It's a big thing for me to be on the same album as both Andrea and Menescal and with Marcos's production, it's gonna sound beautiful. and it's due for completion in April. I'm really feeling like this is a very positive step forward!

So, this year we have another tour for Andrea that we are planning. That should take us to the UK, France, Spain and Portugal.
and we have one date confirmed already which will be at Montcet in France. A very good friend of mine I studied music with way back in 1993 is an amazing guitarist, and when he's not spending his time restoring and improving old retro amplifiers, he runs professional level events. His name is Guillaume in French, or Will, as others know him as Bill Bokey as he now likes to be called, and he ran a festival called the Willstock Jam Festival for about 7 years or so from his farm in the Beaujolais region. As luck would have it, he has a party planned right at the start of our tour, on his new farm in Montcet. So we're planning that to be the opening gig of our tour.
So to give you an idea of the kind of vibe it is going to be, the last track I'm gonna play for you is from his Willstock Jam Festival, from I think back in 2011, and this is a song he wrote and produced.
