So here's what happened in February.
One of our Artists, the Brazilian singer songwriter Andrea Amorim, has begun work as a presenter on the first online TV station - info TV Web. In the North East of Brasil. She presents a weekly show called Artefatos, which means Artefacts but it is also a play on the Portugese words. ''Arte e Fatos' , Art and Facts, and in these programs she has been interviewing artists, starting with those form the region, and the
shows so far have included musicians, singer/songwriters, make-up artists and writers. Links to the YouTube video versions of the show can be found on Andrea's Patreon page. and as usual, there will be links to that on our website.
We have also put her last Album Doce Diva online, on sites such as iTunes, Tidal, Spotify and YouTube. She has some exciting concerts coming up for 2017 and also the new album is on its way.
Last month she did a photoshoot with Ayane Melo Photography and make up artist Andrezza Albuquerque in preparation for the cover design for that. and you can check the behind the scenes photos of the photoshoot on Andrea's facebook page.
She has also been working on Advertisements for various products and Companies that she endorses, further strengthening her brand, recently becoming the voice of Brazilian Travel agency Muitas Viagens.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For myself Dave Holmes, i will be back to Brazil shortly, to rehearse for Andrea's net European Tour. We are also co-writing a commissioned album together and I hope to re-record some vocal for a track we are collaborating on for her new album, and if we get time we want to shoot part of the video for that too.
While I'm out there I'll also be speaking to the music producer that will help me finish off my own single and of course I'll be making friends and connections and also improving my Portuguese and the final piece of news is that we have been talking to other artists about joining Soul Tonic, and I hope to be able to tell you more about that in next month's Podcast.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and now to our monthly feature, where I pick an artist, from my network of talented friends. But before I do that I am going to tell you a little about online busking, which is performing music online.
Back before live streaming took off on social media, which wasn't that long ago, people were looking for ways to make an income by performing music shows live over the internet a series of dedicated music platforms took off and some are still in use today, such as concert window, street jelly and NMB.
A couple of years back I started performing online myself as well as playing on the street when I had no regular gigs. and so I became quite active on the facebook groups for Busking and Online Busking, so I could learn about how to go about doing all of this.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I got chatting online with Markus K, a musician who was born in Holland and left for the UK in his 20s and now lives in Spain. Markus has been able to make a continued living from music, busking on the streets of Europe, along with other paid venue performances and the occasional document translation work using his language skills.
he's also got a Patreon page, just like our Soul Tonic Artists. where fans can offer Monthly support subcribing as Patrons to his projects. and he has a simple yet effective equipment setup, which allows him to layer sounds and create powerful performances. at the end of January this year, he set off on a Tour, initially planning to busk his way from Spain, to Rome with Video Director son Dave Koehorst. Once they got to Rome then decided to travel on from there to Eastern Europe, ending up all the way in Croatia.
They also passed through Slovenia. Markus enjoyed it so much that he declared "Ljubljana is now offically the busking capital of my world."
he has been document the trip via his instagram account, which he also shares to his Facebook page, links to which will be in the Podcast information on the Soul Tonic Website and if you wish you could drop a few coins into his guitar case, well you can also send him donations via his Paypal.me link, details of which will also be on our website.
So a couple of years ago, I visited him on the south coast of Spain. and we played on the streets in some idyllic locations and along the promenades of the sea shore. and we really started to gel and get some great jams and arrangements going, cashing in much of our takings on fine Spanish food and coffee.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another thing that we did was to create a facebook event called Bossa and Blues, one half Bossa Nova and one half Markus's blues inspired tunes. We held a concet in the stone attic in Markus's home in Jalon,
which had a rooftop relaxation area with a mountain view. We sold tickets to friend and other locals and streamed it directly online to the Concert Window platform. So I'm gonna play you a track now from that stream called 'Earth and Stone', it's an original blues song of mine, which will form the title track of a concept album which I have been putting together for quite a while now. i wrote this track around 10 years ago, and we were playing it out on the streets of Spain and with Markus, a blues man at my side, it turned out pretty good.
So here's myself Dave Holmes, with Earth and Stone featuring the talents of Markus K.
[Music - 'Earth and Stone']
(Original song by Dave Holmes)
Song Lyrics
I've been up all night
Just a-thinking 'bout my life
Ponderin' on which road to take
wonderin' when I'm gonna make my break
in my life......
in this life
I'm older than most people know
I was was put here long ago
back when that seed of life was sown
'cos we're all made from the earth and stone
our bodies made from the matter that was always here
and all of life can be traced back to a single sphere
and that's why,
I've been up all night ....
.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So Markus uses a variety of equipment to layer, loop and apply FX to the sounds that he creates with his vocals, guitar and percussion. At one point he was even using Jazz drum brushes on the suitcase that he sits on, with a microphone inside, which made for a very convincing drum sound. So next up in an exclusive for Soul Tonic, Markus takes us through his existing setup explaining how it all works.
Following this I'm gonna play you a facebook video from one of his recent performances on the streets of Rome. It's a track he wrote called Fallen Angel off of his album the Patreon files and this video has received over 5000 views online.
There is also the offical video of the song, directed by his son Dave, which can be found on Markus's Patreon page. and again you can find links in the info section.
So now, over to Markus
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Markus K Equipment run through video]
"So let me run you through the setup I'm using. everything starts with the battery, it's just a normal car battery, the cheapest I could find for 40 odd euros, then a 300 watt invertor, whicih then means I've got everything in 220 volts and this is my speaker an Eurolive B210D, which is really efficient powerwise and it's got a great sound. I've got like a really good full sound on the speaker.
Then the heart of it is, for me, the Voice Live 3, which, I picked that one because it's got an excellent looper, 3 channel looper, and it's also go effects for guitar and for vocals, so everything is there in one go.
Then I use the Wavedrum, the Korg Wavedrum, I've got the global model, for percussive sounds and drum sounds. and I've got a Harley Benton 335 copy, the cheapest I could possibly afford.
So what else, yeah the microphone, and I've got 3 stompboxes outside the voice live 3, just because I like to have everything at my fingertips, so I don't have to go into menus while I'm playing.
And I record the whole thing on a Tascam DR-40, so actually most of my albums are straight from the Voicelive 3 into the Tascam DR-40, and then on tot he computer I use Mixcraft, for a little bit of compression and maybe equalise it a little bit more and that's basically it. That's the setup I've got"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Markus K Rome Busking Video]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More recently Markus has started what he calls "A coherance creating Eco-project named Heaven on Earth in Spain", on a beautiful piece of land which he is buying, he created a strawbale hut, to keep him cool in the long hot summer months and he'll start building a more permanent chalet, once the land is finally his. I believe the plan is to invite people to spend periods of time there learning to meditate.
One of his more recent projects has been a collaboration with Iban Nikolai who is a didgeridoo master from the Basque country. They do concerts together and play on the street. They also have many videos on Markus's YouTube channel.
and so the final track I want to play today is Markus and Iban performing in San Sebastián, Spain. and the track is an original called the Crumbling of the Berlin Wall
