For over thirty years, ALAN MOORHOUSE, has been singing and playing guitar to US, British and German audiences in folk clubs, festivals, theatres, bars - and pretty much everywhere else - from Cornwall to Bavaria.
His introduction to acoustic music was back in the sixties and seventies in the thriving folk club scenes in the Thames Valley and south-west of England, before trying his hand as a busker in both the UK and Germany. After three years back in England gaining an honours degree in Performance Arts, Alan returned to Cologne where he still lives, becoming a well-known and popular figure on the streets and in the bars of the Rhineland, where his performances gained him a cult following. |
After a stint singing and playing rhythm guitar for Cologne blues band Grand Fank Special, Alan formed his own outfit, Alan and the Abits. His first appearance at the prestigious Pflasterspektakel festival of street art and music in Linz, Austria, was televised in Europe and North Africa and he was invited back several times.
In 2001, he released the well received album Small Voice Crying and his second CD, Travellers’ Tales found a much wider audience. His third, a live album recorded in Lennep with his latest outfit, the Alan Moorhouse Band, has been streamed live on Internet radio and has sold consistently in Europe and North America.
Schooled in the competitive and unforgiving world of street performances, Alan has rubbed shoulders with the very best and learned from them – so much so that he became the subject of a television documentary looking into the often harsh and lonely world of the professional busker. (Michael Schomers' “Musik Ohne Noten” SWR 2003)
Of course, Alan has become much more than a busker. Anyone who has seen his one-man musical comedy shows, or caught one of his intimate original performances, will realise that here is a man with a wide range of abilities, which he deploys expertly.
He is able to effortlessly move from a classic British “pub rock” sound to one that is more mellow and more lyrically and melodically sophisticated, catering for any type of event, in any venue, leaving the public on a high and feeling as if they have known his own songs all their lives.
Many other performers have had cause to be thankful for this; his albums have ensured Alan’s rise to some sort of prominence within music circles, with a growing number of acts including Alan’s songs in their own sets.
